Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to offload a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction values the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – following McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding approximately 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team boss and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Ownership Breakdown

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos, who both hold one-third of the enterprise.

An official representative said: "We will be making no official statement on this. The governance of the team stays unchanged, and all three partners are dedicated to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Financial Growth

The deal signifies a substantial rise in worth of the Mercedes team since Ineos Group acquired its share for £208m in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the growth in market values of F1 teams in the past few years as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport around the world.

This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630m (£458 million) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Present Performance

Mercedes are second in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix left this season.

Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team won a unprecedented eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
