Users Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
