In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
