European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
