The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.
This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The legal document highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.
